Composed between November 2006 and June 2007 by Jos Smolders
(Tilburg, The Netherlands), Christopher McFall (Kansas City, USA),
and Sascha Neudeck (Vienna, Austria). The composers have never
met in person; all the material for this release was exchanged digitally.
Mastered at EARLabs, Tilburg, 2008
The first collaboration was between Jos and Christopher. Sascha joined
the project a while later. The initial material (two compositions) was
prepared by each participant and then exchanged via a web server.
The files were subsequently edited by each composer, often several
times, until arriving at a mutually-satisfactory result.

In general I do not like the stuff that is categorized as drone music. There are a few exceptions but often times it is about bass and noise. Sometimes the composer mixes subtleties over the basic layer. Sounds that are barely discernable. Others filter the basic layer so that modulations occur. "Listen", people tell me, "can you hear the subtleties that are mixed into the noise?". Yes, can hear them but why does it continue to do so for 20 minutes? And why not get rid of the basic layer so that I can really enjoy those subtleties?
Another gripe is about the continuity of drone music. Whereas traditionally composers build a musical piece note by note, second by second, drone music is layed out and constructed with (very) large chunks of time. These large chunks are then connected with lengthy crossfades. On the one hand that makes it easier for the composer to get to a lengthy piece but on the other hand it is much more difficult than most people think. Controlling time in a musical piece and thereby keeping the listener's attention is mastered by only a few.

By the end of the 80s I produced my first vinyl release, “Freebasing A For Is Me”. An album completely free of any preconception, built as an abstract expressionist soundsculpture.
With this collection of compositions I return to the emptiness of “Freebasing”.''''

This new work by Jos Smolders is part of his “beeld-kleur” (image-color) series, specifically aimed at “pictorial music” or repesentative music, as opposed to his usually non-figurative compositions. Hemel aims at a connection between a glossy and saturated outside world, and a more secretive — and furthermore spiritual — inner sanctum.

Two mini CD's. Both contained material for further remixing. In fact it was the next step after the first CD "Music For CD player". The basic material here was mainly rock and dance releases and the eventual compositions consisted for a large part of percussive sounds. On one occasion I have mixed the two discs (live) over four speakers. This is possible because the main structure of both disks are quite similar.
This album was co-released with a CD with remixes by Muslimgauze, RLW, Rehberg and Bauer and Radboud Mens and others.
