  REVIEWS:

speaking of jos, comes always to mind another beloved dude, jos smolders, known mostly to you as the mastermind behind earlabs (www.earlabs.org) or to other as a member of the legendary dutch project thu 20. what i always admired in jos’s work at least concerning the recordings I owe in my collection, is that at least compared to other sound artists, is almost impossible to track down a release of his that will sound similar to a previous one. perhaps I might haven’t listened to much smolders some of you might say, though I doubt, “music for kalx.com” is his newest cd release on (absurd’s beloved) dutch ers label and is a lovely game of sine waves creating some really great allow me to say ambient textures, making it an enjoyable pleasure to listen to…

It's been a while for a hard copy by Ios Smolders to appear. Much of his recent work has found its way to the Web, before it ever reached production in the physical world. Music for kalx.com presents five tracks, made exclusively with sinewaves. Of course this has been done before, and I imagine that this is exactly why Smolders decided to do so as well. He is known to take up a challenge when met by one. It may be worth mentioning that the cover states that no additives are added, so we are dealing with the pure thing here. But upon listening it becomes clear that this is not at all another minimalist glitch or click work. Smolders works with sines, but more specifically with their interferences, creating hisses and hums that I would have thought impossible. His work patiently unfolds the multitude of aspects that the sinewave holds, without ever losing tension or depth. These five tracks are all very well composed, using quite simple techniques with great maturity. The whole CD radiates a deep involvement with the material and its use, and a great skill to capture the listener. An excellent work and highly recommended! (MR) Address: ers@staalplaat.com

Smolders has been composing music since the early 80s (under his monikker IOSS) and was one of the original members of THU20, a Dutch electro-acoustic ensemble (which also features Roel Meelkop and Peter Duimelinks, both of Kapotte Muziek and Goem). In the early nineties he released two, now well sought after LP's, one for Korm Plastics and one for Quiet Artworks. His two CD releases for Staalplaat are interactive works and are still available. They are less a finished work, but a work in progress for which the active input of the listener is required. Music for Kalx.com is his latest work and has five pieces from pure sine waves. The CD has a really nice flow in the pieces and can easily meet the best composed works of Ios Smolders, which some think to be the second LP. It has the Ios trademark all over it, despite the fact that he limits himself to just pure sine waves."
